A copyright provides protection for the original work done and is an exclusive right of authorisation. Innovation, intellectual property, scholarly work, and artistic forms are all protected by copyright. Copyright is primarily intended to reward authors. If the content is copyrighted, the creator and the content are protected against actual damage in the case of copyright infringement. To claim damages, the work must be registered within 3 months of publication or before anyone infringes upon it.

Obtaining Copyrights – The Process

  • It is necessary to file Form XIV
  • Six hard copies and three soft copies of each work should be submitted with the application
  • Owners and their advocates must sign and countersign the application
  • There is a fee that needs to be paid to the registrar of copyrights
  • It takes 30 days for the applicant to find out whether there is an objection to their work after receiving the diary number. In the event that an objection is received, the officer will summon the parties and ask them to appear before the officer. Nevertheless, the scrutinizer’s decision is final; it can either approve or reject the application.
  • The application will be registered if no objections are received.
